It’s a beautiful thing to be inspired by others. Whether it’s someone’s success story, their confidence, their creativity, or the way they lead with grace — inspiration can spark something powerful within us. It reminds us of what’s possible, and it helps us see parts of ourselves we may have forgotten or doubted.
But here’s where things get tricky. Sometimes, without realizing it, that healthy admiration starts to cross a line. We stop being inspired by someone and start believing we could never be like them. We start to idolize.
When that happens, we move from learning to comparing, from growing to shrinking. Idolization says, “They have something I don’t.” But the truth is, we all have our own form of brilliance — it just looks different. When we put others on pedestals, we unconsciously lower ourselves in the process.
The problem with idolizing others is that it quietly disconnects you from your own authenticity. You begin to filter your choices, your style, and even your voice through someone else’s lens. You might start chasing what they have instead of cultivating what’s already within you. It’s easy to get caught up in the gold and glitter of someone else’s life — especially in a world that constantly showcases highlight reels — but you lose your sparkle when you forget to honor your own truth.
Here’s the thing: it’s perfectly okay to look up to people. Learn from them. Appreciate their wisdom, their courage, their results. But remember that their journey was built from their lessons, not yours. You have your own road to travel, and it deserves the same respect and dedication.
True growth comes when you take what inspires you and turn it into something that aligns with you. Let others be a mirror, not a pedestal. Reflect on what resonates and integrate it into your own way of being.
So, by all means, admire others — but never abandon yourself in the process. The real magic happens when you stop idolizing and start realizing that the light you see in others is a reflection of what’s already shining inside you.
